Wire diameter — where cost is quietly removed
Wire is sold by weight, so diameter is the fastest place to reduce cost. Dropping the main frame wire by half a millimetre is invisible in a catalogue photo, saves meaningful material on every unit, and shows up eighteen months later as a basket that flexes under load.
A spec sheet should state diameter separately for the frame wire (the perimeter and structural members) and the infill wire (the closely spaced base wires). Frame wire is what carries load; infill wire mainly carries the contents. A specification that quotes one figure for “wire” is incomplete.
Welds — count them, and look at where they are
Every intersection is either welded or it is not. Manufacturers reduce cost by welding alternate intersections rather than every one. The result passes a casual inspection and fails under a concentrated load, typically by the infill separating from the frame.
Two things to ask for: the welding pattern (every intersection, or alternating), and whether post-weld finishing is done before surface treatment. Welds create heat-affected zones; on stainless this must be pickled and passivated, on plated steel it must be cleaned before plating. Skipping this is why corrosion so often starts exactly at a weld point — covered further in surface finishing.

It depends on the load path: frame members carry the load and are heavier than infill wire. Rather than fixing on a single number, insist that frame and infill diameters are stated separately on the specification — that alone filters out most cost-reduced products.
How can I tell if every intersection is welded?
Ask for it in writing, then verify on the sample: run a finger along the underside of the base and check each crossing. Alternating welds are obvious once you look for them and are a common cost reduction.
Does heavier wire always mean better?
No. Over-specifying wire adds weight, freight cost and price without improving service life for light-duty applications. The goal is wire sized to the actual load, stated honestly.
